The Paradox of Care

Health care generates 4.4% of global emissions — that’s 2 gigatons of CO₂ every year, which is equivalent to the annual output of 514 coal-fired power plants. If it were a country, health care would be the fifth-largest emitter on Earth.¹

O&M Halyard is actively supporting healthcare facilities and organisations in tackling this challenge. Explore practical insights promoting sustainable practices in hospitals and learn strategies from experts that can be applied in your own organisation.

Promoting Environmental Stewardship

Taking Bold Steps for A Sustainable Future.

As a healthcare manufacturer, we are committed to minimizing our environmental impact by reducing waste, conserving resources, and lowering emissions throughout our operations. O&M Halyard completed first comprehensive scope 1, 2, and 3 greenhouse gas emissions accounting.

  1. Our greenhouse gas emissions are calculated at the parent-company level using a third-party emissions reporting software, which follows the Greenhouse Gas Protocol: A Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard (Revised Edition), the Greenhouse Gas Protocol: Scope 2 Guidance, and the Greenhouse Gas Protocol: Corporate Value Chain (Scope 3) Standard.
  2. The following scope 3 categories are not material to the business: Scope 3.15 (Investments),  Scope 3.14 (Franchises), 3.13 (Downstream leased assets), and Scope 3.10 (Processing of sold products)
  3. 2024 was the first year that we reported scope 3 emissions, and consequently, some material categories were excluded due to data availability. Those categories are: Scope 3.9 (Downstream transportation and distribution), 3.11 (Use of sold products), and 3.12 (End of life treatment of sold products). We expect to include these categories in subsequent reporting years.

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a tool used to measure the potential environmental impact of a product through its full life cycle (Raw material acquisition to manufacturing, use and final disposal). It provides a bigger picture by showing how a product affects the environment at every stage from the materials it’s made of, to how it’s produced, and what happens when it’s thrown away. Halyard gloves has adopted a Cradle-to-Grave Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) approach, ensuring that every stage of our glove from raw material extraction to end-of-life disposal is measured, optimised, and transparently reported in achieving ESG goals.

The study covers ten different glove products.i.e. The LCA study has been conducted for HALYARD’s glove products by TÜV SÜD, in accordance to ISO 14040:2016 and 14044:2016 . The study covers ten different glove products

Halyard focuses on measurable sustainability impact through Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) to ensure environmentally responsible glove use.

Our 4PL Partnership

Our 4PL Partnership
This World Environment Day, O&M Halyard Australia transitioned to a 4PL arrangement with ParagonCare, effective 5 June 2025. This strategic move reflects our ongoing commitment to sustainability, operational excellence, and responsible supply-chain management. We’ve increased our warehouse count from 3 to 8, enhancing our ability to serve customers more efficiently and improving overall supply chain performance and service delivery.

Responsible Sourcing

As part of Halyard’s ongoing commitment to sustainability, we are optimising our manufacturing footprint. Our new BASICs™ surgical drape range and EVOLUTION™ Zone Reinforced AAMI 4 surgical gown will be manufactured in Vietnam. By shifting manufacturing closer to ANZ, BASICS* may support more reliable supply, potentially reduce freight distances, and is estimated to lower Scope 3 emissions, while continuing to deliver HALYARD*’s renowned quality.

Sustainable Office Premises: Rated Excellent

Our North Ryde head office building has been rated Excellent, a sustainable building by the National Australian Built Environment Rating System (NABERS). This rating recognises the effort in energy efficiency, water conservation, and environmentally responsible building management.
