Sterilization Packaging Systems are critical components of quality healthcare as they must maintain the sterility of their contents until presented for use. Defective, damaged or poorly designed packaging systems may allow infiltration of microorganisms, leading to contaminated contents that may in turn contribute to surgical site infections (SSIs) and other hospital associated infections (HAIs). Recent research studies have documented that many factors may contribute to package contamination post sterilization. These factors, and how they can be mitigated, will be discussed.
