In materials, antioxidants prevent deterioration when the product is exposed to air, extending the shelf life of the product (ex.: gloves, tires). Depress enteral motor activity, reducing movement of feces through the intestines. Antiperistaltic drugs must not be given to patients with a C. difficile infection as the reduced flow keeps the toxin in contact with the areas of the intestinal wall for extended periods of time, amplifying the cellular destruction in that area, increasing the risk of toxic megacolon and intestinal perforation.
